This antique, circa 1860, French Savonnerie rug has a soft chocolate-brown field with an outer sandy-yellow frame panel issuing inward brick-red acanthus leaves containing a shell motif and paired light blue acanthus leaves around a large central floral roundel with an outer floral garland enclosing a central lozenge medallion with acanthus leaves surrounded by four large cusped acanthus leaf cartouches each with a shell motif, in a border of light blue and sea-blue rope motif with acanthus leaf ties linking in each corner a fleur de lys, outer plain sea-blue stripe.
