Rug #11554

This striking Kansu rug showcases the distinctive artistic sensibility of northwestern China, blending Chinese and Tibetan design traditions. The central medallion is framed by a geometric architectural motif resembling temple or gateway forms, with floral elements and Buddhist symbols such as endless knots and stylized lotus blossoms throughout. The field is rendered in rich blues, balanced by vivid reds and soft yellows. The inner border features a fret pattern reminiscent of traditional Chinese key motifs, while the outer border presents bold, repeating red forms on a blue ground, echoing stylized flames or floral buds. The balance of symmetry, bold color, and sacred iconography makes this a rare and compelling example of late 19th to early 20th-century Kansu weaving.
