This antique, circa 1880, French Savonnerie rug features a charcoal-black field with a central panel surrounded by a bold shaded pink scrolling acanthus leaf vine forming cartouches which enclose fan-shaped shells enclosing a polychrome circular garland with a central blue shield shaped roundel, a gold centerpiece and an acanthus leaf surround, with shell-shaped cartouches issuing from each side enclosed within cusped acanthus leaves and dusty pink shield panels, above and below a broad charcoal-black panel with scrolling acanthus leaf vine issuing delicate floral bouquets and grapes around a central outlined in a gold band and enclosing a large acanthus leaf and a leafy spray, in a shaded blue ribbed outer stripe with gold spaced leaves, a blue cartouche at each corner containing a gold fleur de lys, between a dusty-pink triangular panelled inner stripe and plain outer gold and charcoal-black minor stripes.
